Black Baseball Players

For quite some time, black baseball players were banned from the baseball game in the United States. It started out when the National Association of Base Ball Players started to ban baseball clubs having black baseball players in the early 1868. When the game of baseball became a professional sport, the members of the National Association of Base Ball Players were disbanded.

It was in 1871 that black baseball players started playing professionally because the association that came up with the rule to ban them was gone. The members were separated into different teams competing professionally. However, black baseball player racism has found its way in the leagues once more. Moses Walker, one of the first black baseball players during that time had a great major league career. His injury in 1884 was the end of his baseball career.

Black baseball players of the past became excluded once more especially when other players refused to play with or against them. Among the many prominent players was Cap Anson. He would not play if there was a black baseball player in line, whether it was from his team or not. Since then, it became established that African Americans cannot participate in the Major League Baseball. The percentage black players in baseball have started to decrease. It was in 1890 that the baseball color line agreement became effective.

Jimmy Claxton was the first black baseball player to break the baseball color line agreement which only lasted for a week and played only one game. Claxton’s friend revealed the he had African American origins. After a week of becoming part of the Oakland Oaks, he was fired. 1920 was the year Rube Foster organized the Negro National League. It was formed to enable a list of black baseball players to continue playing professionally even in a different league. United States had two major leagues then.

It was only in 1945 when the 1st black baseball player had signed to play in the Major Leagues. It was Jackie Robinson, black baseball player who was helped by Branch Rickey and baseball commissioner Albert Chandler. The first black Major League baseball player, Robinson, played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Even though he received several death threats, he was able to make it through the whole year. He was even awarded the Rookie of the Year. The first professional black baseball player to win an MVP was Jackie Robinson as well.
