The Arizona Diamondbacks are known as the D-Backs. Many years ago, Jerry Colangelo envisioned a major league franchise for desert state of Arizona. Hence, he proposed to the baseball league for a team and on March 9th 1995, his dream came true when Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team was granted the license to play for the 1998 season. The name is rather interesting. Colangelo’s group gave a page long ad about a naming contest in the sports column of Arizona Republic. The winning entry was the name – Arizona Diamond backs.
Along with the formation of the team, the construction of Arizona Diamondbacks ballpark was started. Known as the Arizona Diamondbacks stadium, it has a retractable-roof and the stadium is called Bank One Ballpark, nicknamed the BOB, which was later renamed to Chase Field in 2005. Arizona Diamondbacks stadium is located in East Jefferson street in Phoenix. Arizona Diamondbacks' first major league game was against the Colorado Rockies on March 31, 1998, at "The BOB". The Rockies beat the Diamondbacks with a score of 9 points over 2. On April 5, 1998 Arizona celebrated their first MLB victory over San Franciso with a score of 3-2.
In the year 2001, Arizona Diamondbacks created history. The most dominant pitchers in all of baseball were Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. Arizona had postseason victories over the St. Louis Cardinals (3-2 in the NLDS) and the Atlanta Braves (4-1 in the NLCS) to advance to the World Series. This was one of the most exciting series World Series as they beat the then reigning champions, the New York Yankees, with a score of 4-3. It was all the more amazing as Arizona Diamondbacks were only four seasons old.
